UPDATE: Sadly Victor has passed. You can see our tribute to Victor here
We have a lot of great independent fly fishing guides here in Xcalak. I am putting up profiles of the guides in this space. I have personally been out fishing with every one that is highlighted here so I can personally vouch for their expertise and professionalism.
First up is one of my personal favorite guides here, Victor Castro.
Victor is one of the most experienced guides in Xcalak. He also happens to be my favorite guide. His style is very relaxed and professional. He makes you feel very comfortable. He also happens to be a good businessman. He runs the most independent guides in Chetumal Bay. I can personally recommend all of his guides.
Age = 53 years old,
Years Guiding = 20 years,
Favorite fish = I love any fish, Bonefish, permit, baby tarpon, snook, jacks,
Favorite fly = for bones = gotchas, for permit, = Acocote Drum Majorette, snook =EP Mangrove Oscar, baby tarpon = Tarpon Toad, I do not have a favorite fly, because the fish eat different food each day, just like Humans,
Name of boat(s)= Osprey, Lisbeth, Yamily,
Why start fly fishing guide = I was a commercial fisherman for 20 years, when I had an opportunity to start guiding at the second hotel around here, the Tierra Maya Hotel. After 4 years of doing both guiding and commercial fishing, I decided to concentrate on being a fly fishing guide.
What I like to do when not guiding = Visit my 6 grandkids and sometimes fishing myself.
