Acocote Wellness
Wellness services here at Acocote Eco Inn was always part of the plan but a few other details needed to be shored up before implementing this. First, we had to update our solar, fix the palapa roof, build a cistern, freshen up the rooms, learn how to live in the Yucatan, where to shop and get stuff fixed etc. Three months later, we are ready for phase II of the services we provide here at Acocote Eco Inn.
I offer two kinds of treatments: Swedish massage and Jin Shin Jyutsu. Swedish massage is the therapy most familiar to people. The goal of Swedish massage is to relax the body by rubbing, kneading and even lightly pounding muscles following the direction of blood returning to the heart. This modality provides many benefits such as increasing the level of oxygen in the blood decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.
For Swedish massage therapy, I use organic coconut oil and doTERRA essential oils. Coconut oil gives a perfect glide in this humid environment while not being too heavy. It also gives skin a beautiful glow. Dear friend and fabulous photographer Doug Barnes of Nowpicturethis.com, gave me the Family Physician kit which I choose from to match the essential oil that best meets the need of the individual client. Deep blue for muscle and joint support, frankincense to lift the mood, lavender for calming and peppermint for cooling sometimes mixed with lavender to calm tension.
For deep work on the legs and feet I use Radiant Massage Cream by Twelve Corners in Franklin Tennesee. I have been using this product for years and passing it on to clients. Now that I live in Mexico, it is harder to source this fabulous oil so I use it sparingly. If you are in the market for an organic moisturizer or massage oil to have at home or to give as gifts I recommend you check this company out at twelvecorners.com.
The other modality that I practice is Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ), a Japanese healing art that I came across while I was working at The King’s English Bookstore as a Children’s Room Specialist in Salt Lake City Utah. At the time, I was writing a manuscript about the Japanese American experience in internment camps during World War II. I was fascinated by the life of this Japanese American healer from Tacoma, Washington (I believe), Mary Burmeister who was sent to Japan by her family to avoid incarceration. So it was my writing life that landed me in the healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu although my 10 years in Tokyo prepared me to accept the possible efficacy of the art before I actually had much experience with it.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is a healing art which is based on an understanding of the body similar to acupuncture’s meridian system. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, there are pathways or flows with points along them called safety energy locks (sel). The prevailing metaphor for the practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu is that of a jumper cable. The practitioner holds two safety energy locks at a time being fully present to the energy or ki as it moves. There is no need to undress for Jin Shin Jyutsu. In fact, Jin Shin Jyutsu will work through a cast or bandages. Most people experience peacefulness while receiving Jin Shin Jyutsu. Generally speaking, it is soothing to the mind, body, and spirit and optimizes recovery from injuries and illnesses. Although as the body rids itself of blockages and comes into harmony, a variety of sensations might occur, itching, gurgling, snoring, fullness or lightness. I studied Jin Shin Jyutsu extensively for a number of years. The late Lynn Pflueger a JSJ teacher out of Marin, California mentored me. Maria Chuapoco of Boulder gave me innumerable sessions filled with wisdom, respect and kindness. The late Carol Matsukawa, my trading partner and study buddy made me feel like “a million bucks.” In this isolated tropical environment, I have found the self help aspects of Jin Shin Jyutsu very helpful and have decided to pass it along to our guests here at Acocote Wellness Center. It’s our hope that while you are staying with us enjoying fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, cycling, and walking, you take an hour or so to rejuvenate as well.
