Leaky Palapa Supper Club – Closed for the season as of May 8, 2016
When I first started coming to Xcalak, going to eat at the Leaky Palapa was always the highlight (Unless you happen to catch a permit ;). Who would expect a fine dining establishment in this remote part of the world? But here it was. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in some of the biggest cities, places like Tokyo, Bangkok, Beijing, Sydney, London, Chicago, New York, LA, and I would put the Leaky Palapa in my global top 10. It is that good. Alas, Linda and Marla decided to close down the Leaky Palapa and move back to Canada last year. There were many heartbroken Xcalakeños when the news broke. Well it’s high season in Xcalak and Linda and Marla are back in town. Not to open up the restaurant but they have opened a “Supper Club’. They do a once a week or so set menu dinner from Thanksgiving to sometime in May, for a limited number of diners. It is also open to guests of the Acocote Eco Inn. So if you are lucky enough to be staying with us during that time frame, let us know if you would like to join us. Some of my favorite items are a Cesar salad with cheese collar that is to die for, the handmade huitlacoche raviolis are just brimming with umami. Here is a sample set menu from December. Eggnog martini, hors d’oeuvres: Watermelon and chevre salad, Pasilla crusted Pork Tenderloin Bourbon & Ancho reduction, Apple chutney, Ginger bread cheesecake. Needless to say, if you can make it to one of these, it will be a highlight.
Price: 380-450 Pesos for set course
Ambiance: Located in the old Leaky Palapa restaurant, it has easy lighting and nice wooden tables and chairs. They also have a nice bar area for the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
